Tolkien-style elf names
Quenya & Sindarin
J.R.R. Tolkien built Quenya (high-elvish) and Sindarin (grey-elvish) with real phonology and meaning. Published names often end in -iel (“daughter of light” patterns), -wen (maiden), -ion (son of), or Sindarin -eth, -or.
Original fan names
This generator produces original names in that melodic shape for fan fiction and tabletop elves inspired by Middle-earth—not literal translations. We block major canon names (Legolas, Galadriel, etc.).
Tolkien vs D&D
For D&D high elves at the table, the D&D elf page is usually closer to PHB expectations; stay here when you want literary Elvish cadence or LOTR fan work.
Quenya vs Sindarin flavor
Quenya: brighter, star-and-light roots, -iel/-ion. Sindarin: grey-elven, softer, -wen/-eth. Mixing both in one character is fine for original characters if it still sounds cohesive aloud.
- Avoid canon names and close homophones.
- Meaning: optional for your story; Tolkien lexicons are separate research.
- Female: -iel and -wen are common endings in fan Quenya/Sindarin style.
